What Jesus says

My command is this: " Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. " (John 15:12)

Who are these guys?

One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite films -"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"! We are all at some time bothered about our own identity. Who am I? Where do I fit in? A lot of us feel we don't fit in, that the world can manage without us, that we don't belong. This feeling can be really strong if we have a parent missing from childhood, for any reason, good or bad.

In our society, we are increasingly identified by numbers - National Insurance, Passport, Post Code, Date of Birth. Sadly, our name is rarely sufficient.

But the model of society that God laid down was that we were all given a Name, and that name has it's own unique place in history -I am Iain, son of James, for instance. Even if we don't know our parents, we still occupy that unique space in history!! Nobody else can fill that space - just you!!

And our scriptures tell us that God loves to give us a Name to identify us. He says " I have summoned you by name - you are Mine!".  Wow! What a great God!

The problem is that the family line leads us all the way back to Adam, and his rebellion against God that has caused sin to pass down the family line to you and me.

The good news is that on the cross, Jesus died as the 'Son of Man(kind)' , and offered us the choice to be adopted by God as HIS SON. Amazing!

John 1:12 says " To as many as received Him, to those who called on His Name, He gave the right to be called Sons of  God".

So, whose son are you?
